But one of my favorite places to camp and fish is Hunting Island State Park near Beaufort, SC.
It offers: 10 miles of lightly used beach for surf fishing. A long fishing pier in a saltwater river. A boat launch into the salt water river, perhaps 1/4 mile from the ocean. A marsh. Creeks empying into the ocean. A lagoon. Great place for kayaking, surf fishing, pier fishing, and motor boat fishing.
The only lighthouse in SC that is open to the public is in the park, and it's where they filmed the jungle scenes from Forrest Gump. Sea turtle nests abound.
As bad a fisherman as I am, I've caught Spanish, Pompano, whiting, shark, and croaker there.
Campground is essentially ocean front. They have a group tent site, which is what I would reserve.
Where I live in the state, nearly any thing on the coast of NC or SC is a 4.5 to 5.5 hour drive. This park is 5.5 hours from me.
SC offers 14 day non-resident salt water licenses for about $15 (have to research exact price, but that's what I remember paying).
