I had a chance Saturday morning to get the little yak out, so I headed for the Broad. I put in near Cliffside, the river was real dingy. I didn't figure the smallmouth would do too much, so I brought my saine net along for some live bait if needed. I got to the dam and there was five people already there fishing. The river was up so all of my normal places to stand and fish were either underwater or in a lot deeper water than normal. It seemed like everyone there was throwing some sort of plastic, so I opted for a crank bait. I caught two small guys right off the bat, 8 to 10 inches long. Then someone else showed up, so now there's 7 people fishing this small dam, always one to be prepared, I brought the old sweet corn out and started doing a little carp fishing. After an hour and no luck on the carp, the crowd had thinned out, so I sained out a dozen or so helgamites. I started doing some catfishing, and I put 4 nice eating cats on the stringer. After everyone had left and I was the only one there, I went back to the crankbait again and ended up catching 5 more smallmouth, all about the same size around 12-14 inches. A very nice day, caught a few fish and got to do some paddling. A man couldn't ask for much better. Here's a few pics.
