I decided to get up early and do some Independence Day fishing before it got too hot, and it turned out to be one of my best bass fishing days of the year. Hit the water about 10 til 6 armed with a top water plug and a Deep Creek 'Razor Beetle'.
I got one bass and, oddly, one catfish, on the top water. Had a huge blowup that missed, and could have been a gar. The rest came on the Razor Beetle, including a second catfish. This was the first time I have caught catfish in this river, and I have been there quite a few times.
The Razor Beetle is an odd looking lure, but the thing works! The bass were trying to eat it too, not just giving it a passing strike. All of them were hooked fairly deep in their mouths, and I had 3 of the baits get destroyed in the process.
Total catch was 5 bass and 2 catfish, and I was done by 10 when the sun started getting up.
