ICW around Swansboro

Sunday I took my kayak out around 1pm and concentrated fishing around the ICW. As I usually do, I was throwing some plastic as I slowly made my way to a spot I was hoping would hold a drum or two. Cruising down a bank I threw out a 3" gulp shrimp in white and got a nice hit and short fight to land a little 12" puppy drum. Puppy drum was what I was hoping I'd be coming home with this day, but this guy wasnt the one so he went back in and I kept on moving.

Found a good spot to get out and load up on bait before heading into the place I had in mind. Close to where I wanted to be I spooked quite a few good sized fish and I'm thinking they might just be the ones I was after so I anchored up not far away hoping they'd make a return, if that's what they were. The crabs/pinfish kept me busy and for the next hour or so I was going through the constant rotation of checking bait, rebaiting, casting, checking the other rod when finally the rod on my left bends over and starts pulling some drag. Not sure at first if I'd gotten a drum or if a ray was toying w/ my emotions, I was relieved to see the tail whip that a drum does when you start getting him into some shallow water and a minute or two later I had an ear-ear grin once I had this pretty 22" drum in my lap.

Hung out in this spot for another hour or so w/ one other bend over of the rod that only took the bait and made my way in. Of course I made my way in slowly and I was back to throwing plastics. Pinfish had eaten all the tails off my gulps by the time I got to a spot that I've been suspecting for some time now harbors good fish so I went ahead and threw the half of pink/white Gulp jerk shad that I still had on my jig and my suspicions were correct. This palce was harboring a nice fish and I netted a 19" flounder that was bleeding so bad from his gills the only thing to do was throw him in the bag w/ the drum.

Got back in around 6pm. Only 3 fish to speak for, but still a great day out on the water and brought home some meat to my girlfriend who said "bring me back some fish" before I headed out. Looking forward to tonight's dinner!
