Let's face it, the rod and reel you need/would like when you hook up to a monster needs to be strong and hold a lot of line and have decent drag settings on it, and these set ups are not the easiest to cast out. Some people are innovative and paddle their baits out, some people make complicated gas propelled frozen bait launchers that cost 800.00. Me, I don't have a vehicle for a kayak, nor would I want to carry all that stuff out to the point. So I figured there has to be SOMETHING I could utilize to get my line on my fighting rod/reel out into the water. Because people who fish are the most innovative people on earth I am wondering if someone else here has thought what I just did in my office instead of working.
I have two rods, one is a 12 footer penn torque rod (my fav) with a abu garcia 7000ic3 reel.
My newest reel is a Diawa SLD20 which is attached to my 6 foot Penn Slammer rod. The Diawa I think I could cast off the 12 foot rod, but I want to fight sharks with this Slammer rod, and the star lever drag is awesome, it holds about 400 yards of 40lb test. I have 2 drags the first one i picked up a 10 lb weight the second one is set at 20-25 pounds (i think), but I digress, the problem is getting the bait out there with this combo.
So, this is my idea. put the line from the abu through the sinker on the shark rig. Then using the abu and 12 foot as a surrogate casting platform. Toss it a good 100 yard's or so into the blue. But how do I get my line back? I needed to think of some time of release and I got the idea from another board where they used a life saver to balloon out their baits.
I am going to make a slip not in the abu line, then stick the loop through the eyelet on the sinker(of the shark line), put that loop through the hole on the lifesaver, then using a half life saver, make a stopper, tighten down the slip not on the abu line. Cast the bait out, wait 20 minutes, then real the abu in, because it should (intheory) come right out of the eyelit of the shark line's sinker.
Obviously I would have to have the line pulled off the diawa into a make shift user friendly coil. I am concerned with the strength of the life saver holding up to the power of the cast. For this I could probably use more than one, or use a rubber band to absorb the shock.
I plan on attempting this feat this weekend. I cannot be the first gentlemen on this board to try something like this. Any thoughts? If it works I will probably buy a BIGGER reel.
