I bought a car a few months ago. It's a new Ford Escape, and it has the side bars but not the cross bars for the roof racks.
I'm heading across the state to the red x M&G on friday. I want to bring my sons' kayak with me.
I do not want to spend any money on kayak carriers or foam pads, or cross rails right now. I also do not want to scratch the paint on my 5 month old car.
If I were to put multiple (say 4 rows) of foam pool noodles across the side bars, and lash them to the side bars, do you think that would safely trasport a 55lb kayak and protect the paint fairly well? Of course, the kayak would be tied front and back, as well as lashed to the side bars.
Obviously, the foam noodles would sag under the weight of the kayak, which (I think) would make a fairly nice concave surface.
What do more experienced kayakers think about this? Am I nuts? Should I just leave the kayak at home?
