Some help with Watauga/Holston/Beaverdam...

I know - not NC, but pretty darn close. My Dad and I are heading up to a friend's cabin in Shady Valley, TN over the weekend and we are looking for some easy access areas to fish up there. My Dad (06aces on this site) probably can't do a lot of heavy duty wading, but if anyone has some suggestions on areas we can park and wade in slightly and safely, I'm all ears.

The easy fish will be right behind the cabin in Shady Valley on the Beaverdam. I've stayed there before and the owner has a few hundred feet of stream to fish with nice fish in it. So that shouldn't be a problem. Tracking north toward Damascus I was thinking we might be able to branch off and drive along the Creeper Trail to find some spots, but I'm not too sure. I biked the Creeper a few years back and there were a ton of great place to fish on the descent, but Dad can't do that unfortunately.

I'd also take any advice on places we can drive and wade on the Holston and/or Watauga. I'm told that the areas below the tailraces are good, but care has to be taken to keep an eye on the generation schedule. Looking at the Watauga it looks like the flow is minimal from 2 to 5 each day, then it ramps up. Like I said, Dad isn't the most super mobile guy in the world, so I want his wading to be safe.

Anyway - any suggestions would be appreciated. I'd sign us up for a float trip, but I don't think Dad can be in a boat for 4 or 6 hours at a time at this point. (He is recovering from some medical treatments and is getting stronger each week, but he still isn't there yet..)

Looks like we'll have a little snow up there..but temps in the upper 50s, so it looks perfect. In exchange for information, I can promise some good pics and video like my other trip reports:

Yeah!!

Thanks so much..
