Took advantage of the great weather we had last weekend by making a trip to the lower end of Kerr to drift for some blue cats. The fall is always my favorite time of year to be on the water because the leaves are beautiful and the fish usually are very cooperative...but this trip was particularly exciting because I had a first time fisherwoman along for the ride! We got on the water around 8:30AM and cruised around a bit until we located some large schools of bait in the mouth of a small creek. Around 9AM we began putting out our setup of 6 santee rigs, and by 9:05 we had our first fish in the boat.
I took this as a good sign and it was, because we never had to leave the creek all day. The bite remained fairly steady and I lost count of how many blues we caught, but I would guess in the ballpark of 15 or 20. We didn't catch any monsters, with most fish being in the 5-15 pound range...but Francesca did land her new PB of 18 pounds. And I must say that she did a great job of fighting the fish! I would've never guessed that this was her first time fishing. She was a very quick learner and she even took the initiative to hold the fish for a couple of pictures before we released it. :D To top the trip off off, we ended the day on a great note....a double hookup with an 8 and 10 pounder.
All of our fish were caught in the main creek channel, in water from 15-45 fow. Bait of choice was shad, and the water temp was around 60 degrees. All fish were released, with the exception of two smaller guys which I saved for the hot grease treatment. All in all it was a near perfect day on the water in my book, and I feel fortunate that I was able to share it with a first time fisherwoman! She is already asking me when we're going again ;) haha. Thanks for reading and hope to see ya'll on the water. Tight lines!
