60+ fish EPIC DAY

David (aka Wookie) has been my main fishing partner basically all year. We have fished almost every single weekend this year together, and a pair of tournaments. Up until now, we have never had a day on the water like the one we had today.

We arrived at Willis Landing near Hubert, NC roughly 9:00 A.M. We talked to a fellow angler from ncangler.com at the ramp, which we have seen at the ramp before. After discussing kayaking and fishing for a while we finally hit the water. We launched at dead low-tide, cold, rainy, and neither one of us really even felt like getting out of bed this morning.

After about a 4-min paddle we decided to stop and turn around to go to our usual “honey hole” which was around 15-min the other direction. The tide was extremely low; we didn’t think any fish would be holding back in the creek. David decided to make one quick cast to be sure, and BAM he hooks into a nice slot red. I immediately got excited and threw my lure in the same area. BOOM, both of us on first casts got nice reds! We couldn’t believe it….little did we know the best was still to come.

Literally cast, after cast, after cast we doubled up on reds. For the next hour and a half we stayed on the spot just slaying fish, one after the other. It was absolutely incredible. It didn’t even matter what we threw at them, if it was in the water, they would eat it. We both starter off by throwing Z-Man paddle tails on 1/8oz jig heads, bouncing off the bottom. Next we decided to put on the go-to, Gulp Alive 3” shrimp. I even caught one on a freshwater Keitech Swing Impact Fat, texas rigged. (I had to switch to my baitcaster, because my right wrist started hurting from all these fish!)

After a while, I decided to upgrade the size of my presentation. I opted for a 4” shrimp on a 1/8oz jig head. SHMACK! I got a very nice red next cast, the second largest ive caught all year! (out of a kayak) We continued on another 15-20 min catching fish after fish, and then the weather decided to turn south. It started DUMPING rain on us. We paddled as fast and hard as we could in the direction of the launch point, but it was no use. We had to stop and take refuge under an overhanding tree for 10 min for the storm to pass.

David felt lucky after the rain seized and decided to check out the hole after our short recess. Of course, first cast what does he pull up? NO, not a red. Gotcha! He finally got a flounder. Only 13”, but still, a flounder. I was still getting organized under my tree and I hear him yelling again. He caught another red! Then another! I paddled my @$$ off and finally got there. I made a few casts and pulled up my last red of the day. Then all of the sudden, the honey hole just turned off. We never got another bite after that, so we headed back to get some lunch and call it a day.

Neither one of us have experienced quite a day like today. We totaled over 60 fish combined, most of which were slot sized reds. What a truly incredible day, and one that I will never forget. That is a pretty impressive feat out of any vessel, yet a lot a pair of kayaks. Its days like today that keep me going while looking for employment. Have a good one folks! Thanks for reading.
