If you follow tourneys you can figure out who/what new event I'm not naming by name.
A disabled (COPD) guy asked if he could use an electric motor in this kayak tournament. He even said he could provide info to certify his condition.
I don't see much of a problem there. He can (prob) go farther and faster than I can so that's a definite advantage but still I think I could get over it. That might not be as easy as I think once I was there and watching him dust me off the line at launch though.
BUT here's the real issue- the organizer has replied that for this tournament ANYone can use an electric motor.
Then went on to say its kayak ONLY.
Sorry canoe anglers. You are not welcome. Of course there will be guys with 60lb thrust trolling motors on commanders and Ultimates which are almost entirely the same as a canoe but "hybrid kayak" sells better. A guy in a canoe that is paddling could be argued to be more "kayak" than a pedal driven guy.
I've got a problem driving a wedge between canoes and kayaks. I like to just say "human powered." Arms or legs and kayaks or canoes will always be welcome in the Hardcore Tourneys. A guy with an electric motor for any reason is plenty welcome on any other day. Just not tourney day.
What I don't like beside the advantage of speed and distance it's going to give someone with a motor- this basically is the opening salvo for the "arms race" if more events allow motors. Where competition is involved its inevitable that it will turn into a game of "one upmanship." Before you know it we got 350 lb kayaks with 2 deep cycles that can go over 10mph. You gonna paddle and compete against that?
Certainly people can make the rules for their own events. As well as their own ideas of what kayak/canoe angling is to them.
What are your thoughts on these points??
