First Trout of the Year

Location: Creek off the Upper Pamlico River
Water Temperature:59
Catch: Trout
Bait: Live Target Menhaden

After finally catching my first trout from a kayak back in November, I have had the itch to go. I headed out to one of my favorite creeks off the pamlico. I fished Friday from about 9-1, with a few bumps, but no takers. The mouth of the creek was 46, with the back near 50. After getting skunked, I decided to hit it again hard Sunday afternoon. Paddled to a hole in the back of the creek, numerous mullet breaking the surface, but not a single bite. After about 15-20 mins, a sad shake of my head, and a prayer or two, I started moving towards the mouth of the creek. Paddled about 30 yards to a old piling sticking out of the water, first cast, boom. Trout on. Moved a little farther down, and managed to hook two more. After an hour started paddling back because it was getting dark. Was using the Live Target Menhaden. I would classify it much more of a warm water bait because you have to move it to get the action, but today it was the ticket.
