Just wondering....

A few days ago I was fishing a lake that has bass, bream, catfish, crappie and some perch. As the day got later the surface activity really got heated up and there were numerous splashes and breaks all around me.I had been catching bream and bass on roostertails and these fish hit on practically every cast until I quit fishing. They were crappie and ran from several oz. up to 10 or 12 oz.Each and every one hit like crappie usually do but after the strike they would run and jump and fought much better and ran much faster than crappie usually do.I personally put the crappie, even big ones, way down on the bottom of the fighting list.I've caught them well over 2 lbs. and other than the added bulk, the fight is never spectacular.Once or twice a year I find them in this supercharged condition and it is always in the spring and almost always mid March to mid April.I'm sure it is temperature related and the fact that the fish are on top.I've caught them on poppers, spoons, hardbaits, spinners, etc. When I tell someone that I just got some crappie and boy did they fight and jump,I usually get a look of disbelief.Has anyone else had this experience?

The other interesting thing was that one of the bream I caught was a male in full spawning colors and he sprayed me as I unhooked him. That's the earliest I can remember that happening.
